This office was officially opened by the Honourable Henry Tang, the Chief Secretary for Administration, on 21 March 2011.

This is the first Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) set up outside China under the "Basic Law of the HKSAR of the People's Republic of China" and the working principle of "One Country, Two Systems" since reunification in 1997. As part of the Government of the HKSAR, HKETO, Berlin is the official representation of the HKSAR and oversees bilateral relations in economic and trade matters between the HKSAR and Germany, as well as seven neighbouring countries, namely Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Switzerland.

The set up of the HKETO, Berlin demonstrates our Government's commitment to forging closer, stronger and focused ties at the governmental level with the market players and growing economies in central and eastern Europe, in collaboration with the well-established statutory and specialized organisations, like the offices of Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Hong Kong Tourism Board based in Frankfurt am Main.

Our office commenced operation in Berlin in March 2009. We have since explored, established, and developed working relations with the governments, trade organisations, business organisations, think-tanks and media to promote the interests of Hong Kong.
